The social security system consists of a complex body of legislation. Any Dutch citizen who remains jobless for a long time or is medically incapable of work is entitled to benefit, under legislation drafted by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment, including: - the General Old Age Pension Act (AOW), which entitles Dutch residents to an old-age pension from the age of 65. - the General Child Benefit Act (AKW), which helps pay the costs of bringing up children up to the age of 18. - the Surviving Dependants Act (ANW), which provides benefit to those who have lost a spouse, partner or parent.
